Placer County Sheriff Frequently Asked Questions

  1. How much is a crime report?
    1. $10.00 per Report 
    2. $35.00 per Coroner’s report
  2. Juvenile records are NOT generally releasable unless the requester has a court order signed by the Judge ordering the records to be released or otherwise required by law.
  3. Reports protected by Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPPA) are NOT releasable at any time.
  4. Homicide Reports are NOT releasable at any time.
  5. Photographs are NOT releasable in relation to a Coroner’s reports without a court order per Code of Civil Procedure 129 AND it is for the use or potential use in a Civil action or proceeding in this state that relates to the death of that person, if either of the following applies:
    1. The Coroner receives written authorization from a legal heir or representative of that person before the action is filed or while the action is pending.
    2. To verify the identity of the legal heir or representative, all of the following shall be provided to the Coroner
        1. A declaration under penalty of perjury that the individual is a legal heir or representative of the deceased person
        2. Valid form of identification
        3. Certified Death Certificate (County Recorder’s Office is the Custodian of Death Certificate)
  1. How do I request jail audio/video recordings?
    1. Audio/Video recordings are exempt as a public record under GC 6254(f) unless it is a recording of a critical incident involving a discharge of a firearm or use of force resulting in death or great bodily injury as defined under GC 6254(f)(4) or otherwise required by law.  [Note:  Video may be releasable under circumstances such as sexual assault under Penal Code 832.7.]
  2. How do I request a Booking photograph?
    1. Booking photographs are exempt under GC 6254(f) and PC 13300 as criminal history records.
    2. If you are seeking your own Booking photograph, you must make your request in person at one of our jail facilities and present a government issued identification to obtain a copy.
  3. How do I request Jail Records for a specific inmate?
    1. Jail Records regarding other persons are generally exempt from release.
    2. If you are seeking your own records, you must make your request in person at one of our jail facilities and present a government issued identification to obtain a copy.
  4. Does the Jail charge fees for documents?
    1. We do not charge fees for Incarceration Date reports
    2. All other requests fees may apply as well as fees to create reports for statistical requests.  We would provide a quote prior to processing the request.  Placer County Code PCC 2.116.00 sets the copying fees for our agency.
